  1. The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG software

  4. This distribution contains MS-DOS executable copies of version 5 of the
  5. Independent JPEG Group's free JPEG software.  You are welcome to redistribute
  6. this software and to use it for any purpose, subject to the conditions under
  7. LEGAL ISSUES, below.

  9. This software should run on any MS-DOS machine with DOS version 3 or later,
  10. although we have not tested it with anything older than DOS 5.  You can also
  11. run it in a DOS window under Windows 3.x, and it should run under OS/2 as
  12. well.  A minimum of 450Kb of free conventional memory is recommended.
  13. Extended or expanded memory is helpful; the more the better!

  22. ABOUT JPEG FILE FORMATS
  23. =======================

  25. CAUTION: Handmade Software's shareware PC program GIF2JPG produces files that
  26. are totally incompatible with our programs (and everyone else's too).  They
  27. use a proprietary format that is an amalgam of GIF and JPEG representations.
  28. However, you can force GIF2JPG to produce compatible files with its -j switch,
  29. and their decompression program JPG2GIF can read our files.  (Version 2.0 of
  30. GIF2JPG produces compatible files by default.)
  31.  
  32. The file format we have adopted is called JFIF.  This format has been agreed
  33. to by a number of major commercial JPEG vendors, and it has become the de
  34. facto standard.  JFIF is a minimal or "low end" representation.  Work is also
  35. going forward to incorporate JPEG compression into the TIFF standard, for use
  36. in "high end" applications that need to record a lot of additional data about
  37. an image.  We intend to support TIFF in the future.  We hope that these two
  38. formats will be sufficient and that other, incompatible JPEG file formats
  39. will not proliferate.

  41. Indeed, part of the reason for developing and releasing this free software is
  42. to help force rapid convergence to de facto standards for JPEG file formats.

  94. The source code from which this software was generated is freely available.
  95. The "official" archive site for the source code is ftp.uu.net (Internet
  96. address 192.48.96.9).  The most recent released version can always be found
  97. there in directory graphics/jpeg.  This particular version is archived as
  98. graphics/jpeg/jpegsrc.v5.tar.gz.  If you are on the Internet, you
  99. can retrieve files from ftp.uu.net by standard anonymous FTP.  If you don't
  100. have FTP access, UUNET's archives are also available via UUCP; contact
  101. help@uunet.uu.net for information on retrieving files that way.

  103. The source is also available in the SimTel archives (graphics/jpegsrc5.zip)
  104. and on CompuServe (GRAPHSUP library 15, file jpsrc5.zip).  These copies are
  105. ZIP files which may be easier for PC users to deal with.

  107. Note that the user interface used here differs from the Unix-style user
  108. interface found in the main IJG distribution.  Source code for the DOS user
  109. interface is in file jpegaltui.tar.gz at ftp.uu.net.
